Teaching Philosophy Statement

I believe that my philosophy of teaching is inspired by a quote by Lewis Thomas which states, “We leave traces of ourselves wherever we go, on whatever we touch.” I believe this is especially true for teachers. We have some type of impact on every student that enters into our classroom. I hope to have a positive impact on my students and help them to develop into confident and well-rounded life-long learners. I believe that this can be achieved with every student regardless of background or economic status. I believe that as a teacher it is my duty to ensure that every student not only learns the material but also develops a life-long passion for learning. To do this it is important to me to keep in mind that students have diverse needs and learning styles. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to know who my learners are, what kinds of knowledge and experience they bring to the group, how they learn best and what they want to achieve so that I can tailor a curriculum that fits their needs. I also believe that it is important to have a hands on learning environment full of group activities. It is important to have respect throughout the classroom, both between students and between teacher and students. When students feel respected and a sense of belonging within the classroom they will be more likely to participate and contribute. My desire for them is to feel at ease - never hesitating to raise any questions or concerns that may arise. To ensure this type of environment I will hold classroom meetings to strengthen our classroom community by having everyone support and encourage one another.
