“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow,” this quote is said by the famous John Dewey who created the Dewey Decimal System. This quote inspires me as a teacher because I strive to teach students in innovative ways that will help them understand the topic and I follow their cues when teaching to determine what I can teach them that day. For example, if they’re too energetic and squirmy, I will take them outside for a lesson to try to get their energy out instead of keeping them in the classroom. I try as a teacher to learn with them and to help them instead of forcing them to do things they don’t want. This is only one part of my philosophy as a teacher. My plan for the classroom is to start with basic and simple lesson plans to determine where my students are. After I have seen where they are academically, I can create more complex lesson plans that meet the needs of all my students. I think starting with simple and moving towards more complex lessons will benefit students understanding of the material. In order to build their understanding of the lesson, I have to begin with the easiest part. This also gives me leverage as a teacher to assess what my students already know and can build upon their understanding. I believe that every student can excel and it’s my job to make sure that happens. While tests are the usual tool to assess knowledge, it’s not the only one and I want to create a classroom where different assessments are used to test students’ knowledge. I’ve never been a good test taker and I have had test anxiety in the past and I don’t want to create that for my students. I want to use projects, papers, group activities, and other ways to test my students’ knowledge. Although I will have some tests in my classroom, I don’t want it to become a normal thing. I want my classroom environment to have many different assessments so each child can have a chance to excel. After my students have their assessment, I want them to give me feedback on it. Did they like this way of assessing their knowledge? Was it too hard? Too easy? I want to know their thoughts and feelings about the assessments so I can make changes in the future if need be.
