My Observation At Pittsburg State University

As a future educator, understanding how to design, implement, and interpret results from a range of assessments is essential to being an effective teacher. Throughout my time at Pittsburg State University I have gained an understanding of the several ways to engage learners in the assessment process, how to align instruction and assessment with learning targets, and how to engage the learners using technology. I gained this knowledge through the major teaching unit in Techniques for Teaching Secondary Mathematics, and activities completed in both the Manipulatives for Teaching Secondary Mathematics and Educational Psychology. From Manipulatives, I have gained an understanding of the variety and possible usage of many manipulatives such as physical or virtual. While completing my Observation at Pittsburg Middle School, I was actively involved in activities using manipulatives in the classroom. Although I have many qualifications in the area of instructional practice, there are a few in which I need to grow. I need to expand my knowledge on how to give effective descriptive feedback to students, and my understanding of the process of curriculum design. My plan to address these areas of growth is to talk to my cooperating teacher and other teachers during the professional semester to gain an insight into their strategies for communicating effective feedback. Also, I would like to research and keep a record of the variety of strategies to effectively communicate feedback. My strategy to address the area of understanding curriculum design and how appropriate sequencing affects students is to talk with the principal at the school where I will be completing my professional semester. I also plan to discuss with my cooperating teacher and other math teachers who are involved in the process of designing the curriculum.
