Today in society many people are focused on what they are doing. In major cities like New York City, you will see people driving to work, talking on cell phones, using their computers in coffee shops, and listening to music. People walk past each other with the a slight glance at most because they have there face glued to their phone or have dark tinted sunglasses. If you think about technology before cell phones were invented, people were interacting and saying hello each other, carrying but a briefcase. As you can see, society has changed, and is still changing as technology evolves. The very morals that America was built on, have been lost. A narrative is "a story of human history that give s meaning to the past, explains the present and provides guidance for the future. It is a story whose principles help a culture to organize its institutions, to develop ideals, and to find authority for its actions" (Postman 172). The story of Technopoly is "progress without limits, rights without responsibilities and technology without cost. It puts in its place efficiency, interest and economic advance. It promises heaven on earth through the conveniences of technological progress. It casts aside all traditional narratives and symbols that suggest stability and orderliness, and tells, instead, of a life of skills, technical expertise, and the ecstasy of consumption. Advertising is less about the product and more about the consumer. Many magazine companies got into a national market by advertising themselves in other magazines. Other early industrial growth didn’t use advertising as a target for consumers. They used straightforward language. Although, saying a word over and over again has transformed and lost meaning because it has been drained from it’s symbolic. Postman mentions about using historical and political images to attract sales. They used Presidents such as, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington as front cover of their President Day Sale. Magazines creating ads know what they are designing them with a consumer’s eye. Some may have a design or a model that interested the reader. In today’s society women and men are subscribed to magazines they enjoy reading. Women see the body of a model in the couture photo and want to be just like her.
