He was named Thomas Lanier Williams3, for his paternal grandfather. He later used this slender thread to justify the nickname he adopted slender. He also used the name for himself for his poetic character. Williams was called as “Tom” In his youth his father worked with a telephone company and traveled up and down on their behalf had left Edwin and his two Children with her parents, his father was a hard drinking, traveling shoe salesman who spent most of his time away from home.
