“Thank You M’am” Essay Response In the story “Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, the boy Roger, seems to be lonely. The story is about a boy named Roger who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse, she takes him to her house and takes care of him. Roger could be described as lonely because he has nobody home at his home, he is very respectful of Mrs. Jones, and he tries to steal.
The realistic fiction story “Thank You, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes is about a woman named Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones helping a troubled boy named Roger. Mrs. Jones demonstrates that she is self-sufficient. She shows this by being caring, strong, and above all, independent. The first reason Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is self-efficient is because she is caring.
On "Thank you Ma'am" by Langston Hughes, the robber name Roger (who were just a teenager) was trying to steal Mrs. Jones' large purse. If Mrs. Jones ignored him and just called the police then the Roger would go jail and would live the way that doesn't look good. I will be discussing why Mrs. Jones took him home, how their actions determine their character and the theme of the story. Instead of turning Roger in to authorities when he tried to steal her purse, Mrs. Jones took him to her house. She took him there to feed him, give him some money, and to teach him a lesson.
Roger acted just like a petty criminal should, after failing to get away successfully with the purse he tries to get away. But after being trapped by Mrs. Jones, he still tries to squirm lose to try and get away from Mrs. Jones. He also gives an excuse like “I didn’t try to steal your pocketbook” from pg 1. He tries to exploit every way to try and get away including trying to be nice to her to feel like it’s better to let him go then bring him to the police. This relates to the thesis, in the way that he has not changed at all and thinks stealing is a way for him to get nice things.
