Interpretive Writing In the short story “Thank You Ma’m,” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones took Roger home because she wanted to teach him the Do’s and Don’ts in life after he tried to steal her purse. Mrs. Jones took Roger home and taught him not only one, but many lessons. In the beginning, Roger is described as a poor boy in the dark that was going around stealing stuff. Most people tend to steal things at night, or when it is dark so they don’t get seen. “It was about eleven o’clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse,” (line 4-6). Again, Roger is shown to have a characteristic that is in need, or desperate for something. After Roger fails, and is “captured” by Mrs. Jones, she
