“Thank You Ma'am” Interpretive Response “Thank You Ma’m” is short story written by Langston Hughes. The main characters are Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones and Roger. Mrs. Jones is a large woman who works at a beauty salon. Mrs. Jones lives in a rooming house, so she doesn’t have a lot of money. Roger is a skinny 14-15 year old boy who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse.
The purpose of “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes is to accurately display, through the times of that century and human emotion, that despite money, power, and the color of your skin there can still be an unhappiness of the soul. There is evidence in the beginning of the short story of two men’s unhappiness in life the symbol of them being uncontent was their hunger. “Man, ain’t you hongry.... Well, sir, I’m tellin’ you, I was so tired and hongry and cold that night.” (253- 254).

Roger could be described as lonely because he has nobody home at his home, he is very respectful of Mrs. Jones, and he tries to steal.

Well, in the short story, “Thank You Ma’am,” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, the protagonist, does just that. She has a very complicated personality because she is hostile, but still lonely and caring. A big indication that Mrs. Jone hostile is, after, a boy made an attempt to steal her purse and failed, he fell.
This shows his gratefulness because Mrs. Jones has already done so much and is cooking him a meal and giving him money and guidance, and he wants to see if she may need anything from him in return, like a physical item such as milk, to make it better and even. The second reason Roger is grateful is because he uses his manners and tells Mrs. Jones thank you. After getting a meal and some money, “The boy wanted to say something else other than ‘Thank you, m’am’ to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, but he couldn’t do so. He barely managed to say ‘Thank you’ before she shut the door” reveals Roger’s internal struggle and a big heart to do something more. (Hughes 3).

Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones chose to help Roger, understand that robbery is not the best way to get what you want: " Well, you didn't have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes. " Later on in the story, Mrs. Luella decides to forgive Roger's misbehavior; however, Mrs.Luella took him home to give him a talk instead of calling the police. In fear Roger asked the lady if she was going to take him to jail.
Women of Many Personalities Mrs.Luella Bate Washington Jones is a very interesting person with many personalities in the short story Thanks you Ma'am written by Langston Hughes. She has a bossy side where she snaps quite frequently at Roger. Roger is dragged to her house in a head-lock. If Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones was scared of Roger she would have given him a lesson with her fists.

When Roger tries to rob Mrs.Jones she grabs him by his shirt and takes him back to her house to get him cleaned up and fed. When They get to Mrs.Jones house, she goes to her kitchen to make some food while Roger is washing his face, Roger has a chance to run while Mrs. Jones is distracted but he doesn't, he stays. Roger came to sit down with Mrs. Jones and she talks about her past life and her life now but she does not ask him about his family or about her life because she did not want to embarrass him.
A central theme in the short story “Thank you Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes is a little kindness goes a long way. One act of kindness can change a person’s life forever. Her unnecessary kindness made a major impact on Roger and changes him. As the story progresses, we see that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones shows empathy and kindness for Roger. That kindness appears to pass onto Roger near the end of the story.
“When I get through with you, sir, you are going to remember Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones,” the large lady said fiercely. In the edge of your seat story, “Thank You Ma’am,” by Langston Hughes, the main character of the story is very entertaining with every action that she takes. The main event that had happened in the story is, a boy (Rodger) wanted to get blue suede shoes and he didn’t have enough money, so he tried to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones purse, and that was a bad choice. After that, she caught him with a strong, bold arm and took him to her house. While there, she talks with the boy and feeds him.
