“Thank You Ma'am” Interpretive Response “Thank You Ma’m” is short story written by Langston Hughes. The main characters are Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones and Roger. Mrs. Jones is a large woman who works at a beauty salon. Mrs. Jones lives in a rooming house, so she doesn’t have a lot of money. Roger is a skinny 14-15 year old boy who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse.
In the beginning of the story, Roger did not really trust Mrs. Jones. He was afraid of her and he just wanted to leave. In the story it states, “...Are you hungry?” “No’m,” said the being dragged boy.
