Personal Purpose Statement: Due to my experience in the Smith School of Business, there are some slight changes that I would make to my personal purpose statement (See Appendix A for original personal purpose statement). This is that I now know what I have to do to thrive at Smith School of Business. This is to develop myself socially and intellectually. Thusly, I can combine the two pieces together. This article really changed my views on my own intelligence and social skills. Although from elementary school to High school my grades improved greatly, from being identified for having learning difficulties to having the identification taken away, I believed that there was a ceiling to my intelligence I could never get passed. As far as social characteristics, being a very shy person and wanting to be less so, I felt like I had to deal with it. The growth mindset article put into words what I wanted to believe for so long. That I could keep growing and learning to become as good as people I looked up to, but in my own way. It also made me realize that to do this I needed to start investing my time into getting to know people that could help me improve in both intelligence and social skills. By applying the seven principles outlined at the end of the article, I can develop a more positive mindset that will promote better academic performance. As the article describes, “…our brains are literally hardwired to perform at their best not when negative or even neutral, but when they are positive” (Achor, 2010). This is important to me as I am more of a negative person, so by working on becoming more positive, I can improve academically and further socially. I will use this by applying the seven principles to my life. For example, using the “social investment” principle, I will further invest in my friends and talk to my family to help me through challenges and provide me a social security net (Achor, 2010). I will use this going forward by thinking more positively and using the seven principles outlined in the article. For example I can use the Zorro circle to break up difficult assignments into manageable chunks as to not get overwhelmed (Achor, 2010).
