IDEA stands for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and was revised from the Education of Handicapped Children Act/PL 94-142. IDEA is a law that makes education easier for children with disabilities in America. It ensures that these children get special education and other services that these children need to succeed in school and to succeed in the rest of their lives. The IDEA dictates how states and public schools do anything relating to special education, from early intervention to special education. It includes annual goals for the child to complete, an IEP is also written into the IDEA Act. An IEP stands for Individualized Education Program/Plan, an IEP is used for students who struggle in school. It is a laid out legal document that provides a solid planned growth program that provides special education instruction, support, and special services the student needs to help them manage and flourish in public school. The IEP Module 3 states, “The IEP addresses the specific needs and current levels of performance of the student, and sets appropriate performance goals based on the student’s current circumstances that will demonstrate that the student is receiving sufficient support to progress toward annual goals.” This is important to remember because the IEP is constantly changing to ensure that the student is constantly reaching for new goals to achieve every school year/semester. It also assures full focus on the “next step” for the student. The IEP is eligible for the ages of 3 and up in public schooling, IEPs are not offered in private schooling as the IDEA billing does not require them to.
