The Big Crunch, The Big Freeze And Heat Death

1304 Words6 Pages

The universe has existed for nearly 14 billion years and should continue to exist for billions more, but eventually at one point the universe will end (Than). Many people have different ideas about how this will happen such as the Big Crunch, The Big Rip, The Big Freeze, and Heat Death. These are all different theories. All that we can see from earth is only four percent of the universe. From this information we can infer that scientists still have a lot to learn about the universe so more theories will emerge over time. I wanted to research this topic because how the universe started and might end fascinates me. It is a dark and depressing topic to think about, but it a really interesting subject to learn about and understand. In my paper …show more content…

The first theory I am going to talk about is the Big Freeze. This theory states that the universe will grow so big that the supply of gas will be too thin for stars to form. The stars, sun and earth will all die and there would not be any light because the radiation would be evaporated. Scientists think that the sun would expand into a red ball and die. This would take place in about twenty to thirty billion years from now (Adams). This would overwhelm the earth with all the heat coming off of it and oceans would boil and evaporate. Eventually the whole earth would disappear except for some rocks left behind. Next, stars will start to die off. Sometime after all of the stars in the universe run out of fuel and burn out, the second stage called degeneration will start. This is when the material is locked into black holes or white dwarfs. White dwarfs are stars that have burned up all the …show more content…

The Big Rip was created in 1999 by Robert Caldwell. The Big Rip states that the dark energy will grow to such a magnitude that the universe will not be able to withstand itself and rip itself apart (Osborne). Dark energy is something that we still have a lot to learn about. Many people have different theories about what dark energy is. One theory is, is that most of the universe is made out of dark matter and dark energy but scientists do not know what either of them is (Preuss). A quick explanation of the Big Rip is that the dark energy and or dark matter will become to powerful that the universe will not be able keep up with all the power and rip itself apart. The Big Rip is on of the newer theories so people do not know as much as some of the older theories, though scientists are learning more every day and are discovering new meaning to this theory. The Big Rip is one of the theories about how the universe could
