All my life I have always done well in school, English has been my best grade for the longest. Reading and writing never seemed to challenge me, as my teachers began to notice it. When I came to school, I did not feel nervous. I felt I would be doing well in high school as well. I stayed with the same simplistic formula at school, and I was doing well. She became the first person to truly care about my success, which inspired me to work even harder in my education.
Going into Sophomore year, I was scared to see how Mrs. Ledet was going to perceive me with our infamous run-in freshman year. However, she noticed my writing skills were advanced from early on. We had our first writing assignment on Summer Reading, the book was The Book Thief. I remember sitting in class when the papers were graded and I saw the comment “Nice voice”. I raised my hand and I asked her, “What is voice?” She replied and said, “Voice is describing your quotes which you do very well”. At that moment, I brushed it off like it was nothing. A couple of papers later, I got a comment from her, asking me if I would be interested to join the Creative Writing Club. I tried it out, but it just did not work out for me. As the year went by, I started to become more hands on with my work in the class, as she proceeded to help as I asked. I did not really like my schedule starting the year off, so I went change it during Orientation. I went see Mrs.Heintz, and she let me pick the teachers I wanted. I ended up choosing Mrs. Ledet as one of them, and I remember walking there with my friends. She saw me coming, I greeted her a contagious smile and she told me “You’re in the wrong class, you belong across the hall,” and I replied with a simple “I belong here”. As the year goes on, I noticed she pushing me harder than the other students. She expects more out of me, as she knows of my talents. It was not given, I had to meticulously work for my grades in that class. When the ACT was creeping around, she started offering help. I took the help and I aided from it tremendously. I took the ACT in March with the school, knowing that this would determine if I would take Dual Enrollment my senior year. I was extremely nervous when the weeks after, because the wait was so long.. After 10,000 years, it came back. I had a 23 Composite, with a 22 in English, a 23 in Reading, a 24 in Math and a 20 in Science. Immediately after, I emailed her showing intense gratitude for her helping me get where I belonged. I’ll never forget her response, it was real, genuine excitement.
