Bruce D. Perry is a child psychiatrist who has guided successful treatment of traumatized children with the use of neuroscience and knowledgement of the child’s history. This publication is about the effects of trauma on children. Perry focuses on neuroscience and how these disturbing experiences affect the growth of a child’s brain development. The traumatic experiences that were mentioned involve children from the ages of 4-16 years old. The main emphasis included the reasons why these children were the way that they were, and how they were treated. The focal point of the analysis was that infants need to be nurtured and cared for within the first few years of being born. Coming to this conclusion, Perry introduces the different parts of the brain that need love in order to expand to it’s full potential.

This 7 year old girl had been sexually molested by her babysitter’s son since she was 4 years old. This boy represented how all men should act according to Tina, and he was all she ever knew as a male figure. She now believed that in order to get a man’s approval was through sexual favors. This affected Tina’s whole well-being. Although Perry did see improvement with his treatment, he discovers that this great amount of damage could never be completely mended. Another examination consisted of murder. He was 16 years old when he murdered two 12 year old girls who lived in his apartment building. Perry had no reasoning for this encounter but with little information he found out that this boy was very self absorbed and emotionless while growing up. The only logical explanation for this was the fact that since birth, his mother would abandon him whenever he became frustrating, for hours at a time. Without the attentive care as a baby, he was unable to understand what healthy relationships were and instead, developed into a sociopath with no
