In Symbolic interactionism, it is believed that race and ethnicity are socially constructed through interactions between individuals, where individuals give meaning to symbols, language and signs through daily social interactions. From the documentary “A Class Divided”, the symbolic interactionist theory can be seen through the blue-eyed and brown-eyed experiment conducted by Jane Elliott. Her experiment divided her class according to their eye color and treated them differently based on this physical characteristic. This experiment showed how easily individuals are able to make judgments based on physical characteristics and how these judgments can shape how we interact with others. The blue-eyed children felt inferior and discriminated against, while the brown-eyed children felt superior, demonstrating the power of these labels in shaping social interactions.

Segregation caused emotional harm in black students by making them feel that their race was truly inferior. Sociological tests by Kenneth Clark proved that segregated schools made black children feel inferior to white children (“History of Brown v. Board of Education”). The biggest fear that many students around the world attempt to avoid is to be physically and emotionally damaged. The goal is to blend in with well-respected classmates and to fit in with others. Although, to those who do not achieve this goal, they are usually targeted by an immature bully. However, an average bully is able to create a more fierce bully within an innocent victim. Perhaps a monster is enraged and caged inside of everyone.
He uses the different bullies in the novel such as Emile Janza, Archie Costello, and Brother Leon to teach different lessons about bullying to show the reader how serious it is. All the bullies are different and bully the weaker characters in different ways to show that bullying is a complex issue and it needs to be handled. The bullying in the novel is tolerated and leaves the victims hopeless as they have given up in their goal to stop the bullying. Robert Cormier allows this to happen and allows the bullies to pick on others to show what happens when bullying is not dealt with and is tolerated by others who are not victims of bullying. Robert Cormier knows that this is a global issue and hopes that his novel will inform the readers more about it and inspire them to take a stand against bullying.
As an example, let’s look at the athletes, which are often leading figures among the students that are given special privileges and status in the school. To single out some students for special treatment is to give an advantage to some and create an elite intelligentsia. In this process, some students are labeled as being better than others. Those students whose friends care about learning have better educational outcomes than those whose friends have little interest in learning (Chen, 1997). For example, a school may place gifted students in a specific group.
Because they aren’t engaged in their everyday text, any little thing that is bothering them makes them become fed up leading them to act out towards another classmate. In addition, in the essay “Still Separate, Still Unequal,” a working class students believes that her race isn’t worth anything. Therefore damaging her emotionally because she believes that if everyone that is a part of her race were to disappear, nobody would care, they would simply be relieved that they are gone. They believe to be worthless. This is all due to the inequalities in the school system.
Jane Elliot Split her 3rd grade c lass into two different groups brown eyed group and the blue eyed group; before splitting them she asked them is being discriminating to others right and they answer the way she expected them to answer because it has been taught to them since they have been in her class, she then proceeded to ask them why was it wrong and they could not give her a clear answer she also ask them would they like to know how it feels to be discriminated against and they all said yes. She conducted this exercise for a total of two days she started the first day off letting the children know that the brown eyed students were more smarter and all around better than the blue eyed student. She then withness some of the sweetest kids turn into nasty discriminating adolescence they tease the blue eyed children every chance they could.
The first unique quality that I can bring to this program is dependability. One thing that I am very proud of is that I have never missed or skipped a class in college. I take my classes very seriously and will do the same for the classes and observation hours in the program. This Athletic Training Program requires early hour observations and I think my dependable character can be trusted by the staff that I will always show up, which is sometimes the most important thing.

In fact, the reason of Pauline’s vulnerability to the racially prejudiced notions of beauty lies in her relationship with her own mother. The relationship between Pecola Breedlove, the protagonist, and her mother, Pauline Breedlove, is ironically characterized by lack of love, and emotional attachment, indifference, frustration and cruelty. The Bluest Eyes open with an anecdote of Dick and Jane to show how racism destroys the mental stability of black people. It equates whites with success and happiness while blacks with poverty and unhappiness. This traumatises the minds of Blacks and they begin to dislike their own heritage and skin colour in the white world of Dick and Jane.
Now the blue-eyed children were not allowed to play with the brown-eyed children because they were not as good as them. They would have to stay in at recess, use paper cups and wear collars. To demonstrate to the children how societal attitudes and mistreatments can affect one’s performance, she tested her third graders’ performances using a phonics card pack. The first day, when the brown-eyed students were told they were not as good as the blue-eyed students it took them five and a half minutes to get through the card
The Bluest Eye illustrates the damage done to a black child when the way she is defined by white society obliterates all positive definitions of her self-worth. Gurleen Grewal reflects that “individuals collude in their own oppression by internalizing the dominant culture’s values in the face of great material contradictions” (21). Indeed, it is evident in the novel how the community at large has accepted light skin as beautiful, and thus has negated beauty in darker skin. Within this dominant culture, white colonialists are the “all-knowing master” that the narrator refers to – the people responsible for giving Pecola “a cloak of ugliness to wear”, which she had “accepted without question” (37). It is this cloak that hides the knowledge of her own true identity and self-worth which, though she “put it on”, “did not belong to [her]” (36).
