“The Challenge” By Gary Soto American writer Mark Twain once said If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.” In the story, “The Challenge,” by Gary Soto, The main character Jose gets a very huge crush on a girl named Estella. He tries a ton of things to get Estella's attention and even lies to get her attention. At the end of the story, Jose gets punished for his consequences in many ways and he lives to remember his embarrassment. Jose has a conversation with Estella about how he is very good at the sport and how he has plenty of tournaments. Estella wants to see if he is good since he is a very competitive player. Jose and Estella decide to go on a little date. They both go to the racket ball court and play with each other since Jose said he was very good which was a very big lie! Before the match, he was very scared because she was a very well-skilled player and he was the opposite! In the story, it states “Jose realized he was dead as a limp fish!” This evidence reveals that he was scared and he knew he was going to lose from the start. He was versing Estella and he started losing by a lot. He wasn't anywhere close to being good enough to beat Estella because she was a very good racketball player! In the story, it states Estella says “Five to nothing.” This evidence reveals how badly he was losing against Estella. This was super embarrassing for him because he said how good he was and he couldn't even score one
