Shakespeare begins the 17th century writing his famous play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, one of his longest works. In the play, Hamlet seeks revenge on his uncle Claudius for the murder of his father, King Hamlet. Shakespeare’s play covers many controversial point of view. One of the most interesting perspectives deals with Hamlet’s character. Hamlet seems to suffer from regression and an Oedipus Complex. The play begins with the marriage of Gertrude to Claudius two months after King Hamlet’s death. When Hamlet is alone, he expresses his disgust for the marriage in a soliloquy. Later Horatio and the guards tell Hamlet that they have seen a ghost. Hamlet goes to see the ghost and it claims to be his father. The ghost says that Claudius murdered him by pouring poison in his ear while he was sleeping. Hamlet decides to take revenge on Claudius and swear Horatio and the guards to secrecy. Hamlet does not know this, so he spares the king’s life to prevent him from going to heaven. Gertrude is frightened by her sons tone and tries to call for help when he tells her she can not leave. Polonius calls for help as well and gets stabbed by Hamlet, who he thought was Claudius. In a fit of rage, Hamlet scolds Gertrude for her marriage to Claudius and makes her promise to never lay with him again. While scolding Gertrude, the ghost of King Hamlet appears, mad that he has not yet taken revenge. Gertrude can not see the ghost and concludes that her son is crazy.
