At the beginning of Shakespeare’s play, Othello is portrayed as a man who is confident in himself and his position. He is deeply in love with his wife, Desdemona, and we can see their relationship was both strong and stable. However, while the play and its events start to unfold, with the help of Iago’s evil plans, these factors don’t stay the same. When Iago begins to plant the seeds of doubt in Othello's mind about Desdemona's unfaithfulness, his once strong faith in love quickly is replaced by suspicion and jealousy. “Othello displayed signs of a man no longer sane.
Iago’s Motives Iago is the main antagonist in Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello. He is one of the most famous and mysterious villains of all time. Some might say he is the embodiment of evil, but what are his true motives? Why does he hate Othello so much?
Even though he doesn't believe in Othello’s achievements he accepts it and seeks revenge on Othello by trying to take his wife from him. Unfortunately he is willing to take advantage of anyone in order to achieve his goals of revenge. Sadly because of his willingness to take advantage of anyone to accomplish his mission a lot of characters get caught in the crossfire. However one good thing that could be said about Iago is his grittiness to achieve his goals no matter how or what gets in the way. He even goes as far as lying to Othello to break the trust that he once had for the people around.
When one considers the play Othello by William Shakespeare, Othello stands out as the main character, the tragic hero, and Iago as the antagonist. The idea that “Othello’s killing of Desdemona is not murder, but a sacrifice. He is to save Desdemona from herself, not in hate but in honour”(Bradley, 1905) is true to the reader as Desdemona can be seen as a sacrificial hero and Othello’s murder act is due to the manipulation placed on him by Iago. This manipulation leads to him killing her as for her to keep her honour. Othello’s friendship with Iago is flawed as well as the actions committed, these actions either instigate out of individual choices or manipulation.

Desdemona is blamed for having an affair with Cassio, which causes hers and Othello’s tragic deaths. Through the eponymous character and many secondary characters, including the manipulative Iago, Shakespeare portrays the “green-eyed monster” of jealousy and its harmful consequences.
I know not if 't be true, But I, for mere suspicion in that kind, Will do as if for surety.". This quote supports my claim that he is in fact jealous. He says it is over a rumor that his wife and Othello had an affair. This could also support my claim that his motivation could be the simple fact that he is evil because earlier, in Act I, Scene I, Iago says that he hates Othello because he gave the promotion to someone else. Now he brings up the rumor for his reasoning for plotting against him.
Iago is the reason behind Desdemona’s death Even though Othello killed his wife Desdemona. Othello is a man that started out with values and principles that were lost along the way because he listened to lies. Othello was a great man that turned into a murderer. He was consumed with revenge because he felt betrayed, despair because he saw no turning back, and later on overcome with grief because of his involvement in the death of his wife. Iago filled his mind with frustration, self-doubt, and made him
He is the same old evil Iago. He even said “maybe they just laid together naked and didn’t do anything” which is insane for him to even suggest to someone so full of jealousy. Iago also told Othello that Cassio said that he was in bed on top of Desdemona, which is also a lie. He is probably happy that Othello is killing his wife because this means he can kill Cassio, his enemy throughout this whole play. Iago is a very smart con man and takes advantage of any opportunity that arises and I gotta give him props for that.
. Iago's actions has always been questioned by critics mainly Bradley and Leavis. Bradly believes that Iago's devilish intelligence is the reason for Othello's destruction. Also that the evil is external not coming from inside of Othello. He says that Iago ruined a great love story in which lovers could have lived happily ever after.
