While both the articles “The Littlest Schoolhouse” by Ta-Nehisi Coates and “Leave Your Laptops at the Door to my Classroom” by Darren Rosenblum explore how approaches to students’ learning styles can assist in the classroom, “The Littlest Schoolhouse” explores expanding the way students learn through technology while “Leave Your Laptops at the Door to my Classroom” discusses the benefits of banning technology entirely from classes. Both Ta-Nehisi Coates and Rosenblum can agree on at least one thing: The goal of education
From the modernization of E-rate to the proliferation and adoption of openly licensed educational resources, the key pieces necessary to realize best the transformations made possible by technology in education are in place. Educators, policymakers, administrators, and teacher preparation and professional development programs now should embed these tools and resources into their practices. Working in collaboration with families, researchers, cultural institutions, and all other stakeholders, these groups can eliminate inefficiencies, reach beyond the walls of traditional classrooms, and form strong partnerships to support everywhere, all-the-time learning. Although the presence of technology does not ensure equity and accessibility in learning, it has the power to lower barriers to both in ways previously impossible.
In Lynne Schrum’s article, “Technology as a Tool to Support Instruction,” she discusses her perspective on the ways that technology enhances education. Technology was introduced to the classroom during the 1980’s but due to internal technological issues, it didn't work well as a learning tool. Luckily, now that we have entered the technology revolution, electronics are no longer an intimidating novel. 21st century technology provides educators with the tools that will merely be used for authentic learning. This educational technology would be used for challenging the brain, tracking educational success and overall enhancing a student's learning.
American Education, many people see many advancements, but has there really been advancements? Today, American education has many outcomes, including many skills. There are also many mixed effectiveness of education, some are very bad, some are very good. Along with today’s education we have to talk about past education to understand what we have to change, and even already have changed. It is important to know about what we go to school for, and what American Education is today and the technologies used, the effectiveness of education, and what education was like in the past.
Education is the most essential component to the future of American society, yet despite all the technological advances that society in general have achieved, it is still one of the areas rooted in the past. Many students today have computers, iPads and the Internet, however school hasn’t change form a decade ago. When Charter schools were created, many hoped that these schools may revolutionize the way public schools were. “Charter schools have introduced varied curricular structures, radically new blends of teaching and technology… One of the reasons charter schools have been successful with some of the most challenging students is because they find new ways to reach them.”
A deep understanding of the developmental variety of its students; attention to behaviors and characteristics of its teachers; creating a supportive organizational structure; and developing of healthy relationships among students, staff, teachers, and administration all help contribute to an effective learning environment for the children. To exude a challenging curriculum, teachers must set goals for students in the beginning of the year, and let the children individually set short and long term goals that are attainable, but will require work in order to reach them (Howell). Not only does this excite the children to learn, but they will be able to motivate themselves to work hard and strive to prosper. Technology has become vital in everyone’s lives, and this does not exclude the Middle schoolers. Integrating technology in the classroom provides new ways for the children to learn while staying on task.
With cutbacks in education and more demands being placed on teachers, 21st century educators are obligated to create efficient and engaging delivery and assessment methods to meet the needs of their students. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan stated that the new normal for 21st century educators is to do more with less, and he specified that “blended learning will play a vital role as school operators must rethink the educational structure and delivery of curriculum with the new realities of public funding” (Horn & Staker, 2011, p. 3). Educational technology assists educators with overall instruction which includes assessment, student engagement, differentiation, and overall learning environment of the 21st century classroom. This approach will make room for at-risk and struggling students an opportunity to substantial make gains when the technology is used appropriately in the classroom and give teachers a chance to truly give time to differentiate instruction while circulating between the desks providing guidance to reach all students especially those who need additional support. America’s school systems are evolving towards digital instruction and the future of education rests in the 9 x 7 inch Apple iPad. Switching to iPads and netbooks from textbooks will revolutionize technology for many fields of education. Flipping electronic pages on a glossy iPad tablet is not just for the looks, but also for a more broad understanding in subjects. The cloud-based student-management programs allows teachers to work while they are at home or at their children’s basketball game. Even the nation’s domestic textbook publishing industries are shifting to a curriculum suitable for iPads and netbooks.
Although incorporating technology in the classroom will be crucial for the learning environment, it will also be necessary for the future. Teaching students with respect to today’s world will not only give them the chance to endure, but the chance to thrive. The overall goal is to give students an accomplished 21st-century education. Teachers’ encompass a multitude of responsibilities. Being an educator that integrates technology requires an endless amount of adaptation, evaluating the performance of co-workers or students, and leading by example.
Many years ago, a simple delivery changed the course of my life. I was in my 8th year of teaching, thoroughly loving Middle School science, when a surprise arrived at my classroom door. A very unassuming young man brought a box containing my first computer for use in my classroom. I immediately began planning how this new equipment could impact my students. That one day, that one moment, led me to my intense passion for integrating technology in education.
