This book;”The Giver,” by Lois Lowry, has two major places (Elsewhere and the community) mentioned in it. There are many pros and cons of living in either, Elsewhere or the community. Elsewhere would be a better place because many things such as love, color, the concept of love, freedom, etc. exists. On the other hand, in the community, which is more influenced by people’s actions, still has some positives things, such as no lying, no concept of color, no war, etc. After looking at many pros and cons for choosing to live in either the community or Elsewhere, the outside world would be the better choice for living in for a couple of reasons. Those reasons are: a family can have as many children as they want, the concept of love is present, there …show more content…

One reason is, in the community, the concept of love is considered inappropriate, which isn’t the case in Elsewhere. Quote: Pg. 127-”Do you understand why it’s inappropriate to use a word like ‘love’?” Mother asked. Jonas nodded,”Yes, thank you, I do,” he replied slowly. This quote clearly shows Jonas’s mom telling Jonas how the word ‘love’ is inappropriate. Elsewhere would be a better place to live in because ‘love’ isn’t inappropriate and for relationships, usually the concept of love is needed to hold a relationship together, which the community does not have. In addition, another way Elsewhere is a better place to live in than the community is , Elsewhere allows a person to have no limit to the number of kids to have as children. Quote: Pg. 8-”Two children -one male, one female-to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules.” This quote shows clearly how in each family unit in the community can have only one boy and one girl. Elsewhere would be a better place to live in than the community because Elsewhere has no rules that say that a person can have limited children. This rule in the community limits people to how many kids they want because some people may want more children and some people may want less kids, so Elsewhere would be a better choice. The community limits a person through this rule to how many kids the person can have. These are few ways that …show more content…

Another reason why Elsewhere is better than the community is; Elsewhere allows a person to pick their own job and not have to be assigned a job. Quote: Pg. 15-”Jonas was surprised. There was no way, really, to know in advance. It was a secret selection, made by the leader of the community, the Committee of Elders, who took the responsibility so seriously that there were never even any jokes made about the assignments.” This quote shows how the Elders’ and the leader selected assignments for everyone and that people weren’t given any opportunity to choose their own job. Elsewhere would be a better place to live in than the community because the community doesn’t allow a person to pick their own job. On the other hand, Elsewhere allows an individual to pick their own job, which is better because not everyone likes it when someone else rather than the individual picks their own job. If the person doesn’t like the job, then they have to stick to it just because they are forced to, which isn’t good for the individual because they will be wasting time one something they do not want to do. That’s another way Elsewhere is a better place to live in than the community. Lastly, another way that Elsewhere is better than the community is that Elsewhere has many variety of books whereas the community does not have many different types of books. Quote: Pg. 74-”In his own dwelling, there was the necessary reference
