The outstanding novel “The Giver” written brilliantly by Lois Lowery is a book about a young boy who lives in a dystopian society. The boy, Jonas, is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory for his job assignment. The giver, the old Receiver of Memory, has to train Jonas for his assignment, by giving him memories. Along with these memories come emotions Jonas never even knew were a thing. Some of the emotions were anguish, love, and happiness.
Another that changes the conflict of the story is Asher. As said in the quote: “What's wrong, Jonas it was only a game, Fiona said, you ruined it said Asher in an irritated voice” page 168 this shows that Asher is with the rest of the community (having no knowledge of before). In the movie there's also a part like in the novel (conflict wise) where Asher tries to block Jonas from escaping. This shows Asher doesn’t know what Jonas is doing is good and he’s with the rest of society. This is the part of the Giver where the conflicts are the same (man vs society).
Feelings and Emotion Different feelings and emotion are not known in the community within the people. The Giver and Jonas are the only true people that know how to feel the different emotions. Every night at the conclusion of their evening meal one of the rituals is the evening telling of feelings. In the very first Chapter Jonas talks about how it was almost December and Jonas was beginning to be frightened. But then thought that was the wrong word to use.
Imagine living in a world with no freedom, choice, individuality, and color. Would you want to live in a world like this? Most of you would have said no, but a boy named Jonas has no choice, but to adhere to his community’s rules. In the book and the movie, “The Giver”, by Louis Lowery, Jonas finds it difficult to accept his community’s way of life. However, after he becomes the receiver of memory, he challenges the community after discovering what the world used to be like before sameness.
I think that The Giver by Lois Lowry is a Dystopia, and here is why. The first reason, is because Jonas has to receive memories and he does not know if it is good or bad, and if it is bad he can have very serious effects like throwing up or spitting blood. A quote to support my example “The Giver shook his head and sighed. " No.
Jonas is a unique character in The Giver. In addition to having abnormally colored eyes, he is unique in his ability to have deeper feelings than anybody else in his society. Jonas’s feelings about his society change, too. Throughout The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas’s feelings of wariness about the society in which he lives transform to become increasingly resentful and distrusting.
The book The Giver by Lois Lowry, is about a 12 year-old boy named Jonas. Jonas lives in an utopian society, which is completely focused on the idea of sameness. Sameness in his society resulted in no memories, no feelings, and no color. On his choosing ceremony, in which his job is assigned, Jonas is selected to become Receiver of Memory. As Jonas receives the memories, passed down to him from the current Receiver, who tells Jonas to call him Giver, he begins to see a world he knew so well in a different way.
(MIP-1) Before meeting the giver, Jonas was an ordinary boy who would follow his society’s rules. (SIP-1) Jonas is an obedient boy who would follow any rules that were set for him, he wouldn’t dare break one. (STEWE-1) After he saw the fighter Jet zoom across his community he would hear “LEAVE YOUR BICYCLES WHERE THEY ARE’ Instantly, Obediently Jonas had dropped his bike on its side on the path behind his family’s dwelling” (Lowry, 2) Jonas would immediately obey the voice, even though he doesn’t know who it is, or what is going on.
In Jonas’s society memories are held by one person, The Giver. The Giver is selected by The Committee of Elders after being observed very closely; The Giver is the one who holds all the pain so the people of the community don't have to feel them. According to the novel, the narrator states, “‘Jonas was identified as a possible Receiver many years ago. We have observed him meticulously. There were no dreams of uncertainty”’(Lowry 62).
