The high demands of both the school and homework assignments and the environment can cause a great deal of stress for gifted students. If children believe that making mistakes means they are not gifted and hold themselves up to unrealistic standards, they will miss out on developing their creativity and discovering new ways to apply their knowledge. Provide opportunities for your child to sustain effort when faced with challenges and help her understand that asking for help can be the wiser choice, and not evidence of lesser intelligence. Advocating for an appropriate education for a child can be time consuming and stressful, but the rewards far outweigh the work. However, some people would argue that parents of high-achieving students play a detrimental role in pressuring their children to achieve at unrealistically high levels or to satisfy the parents' needs. Often parents of a gifted children know that there will be certain hardships their children will face in school. Parents should proceed with caution, and know that their gifted child's mind is like a small plant. With the right nourishment and care, it will grow in to something wondrous and magnificent.
