World War One, originally called the Great War for its unprecedented scale and appalling deadliness, lasted from 1914 until 1918. The war was caused by a combination of entangled alliances, imperialism, militarism, and nationalism, all culminating in a single event, an assassination, which lit the spark which fueled what was, at the time, the deadliest event in military history. Rapid changes in military technology and the use of brutal tactics caused massive casualties in every aspect of the war, and the damage the war wreaked did not stop there.
