Family is an abundant point of The Hate U Give. Family is a group of people who support you, are with you, and that you trust. After Khalil's Death, Family is all Starr has left. After everything that happens, Starr’s family is still supporting her no matter what. Starr also supports her family in many ways throughout the book.

The theme of family is to the purpose in The Hate U Give. For Instance, on page 200 it says “You and your brothers are something to live for, and something to die for, and I'll do whatever I gotta do to protect you. ( Thomas-200) This shows that Starr’s father care’s so much about Starr and her brothers that he knows his purpose is to protect them. This also shows he would die for them if it meant they Lived. For example on page 286 it says that a news reporter asked Starr some questions, one of the questions was “‘He pointed his gun at you?”’ to which Starr responds “‘Yes Ma’am, He kept it on me until other officers arrived.”’ It then states that “Fury sparks in Daddy's eyes’”(thomas-286)This shows that when he learned his daughter was in danger, he was furious. In addition, This also shows that when he knew a member of his family was in danger, he was angry that he couldn't protect them.For instance on page 317 it states that “Glass shatters, then, pop, pop, pop, pop. Gunshots.’Get down!’ Daddy yells. I'm already down, Sekani comes down next to Me, then Mommas on top of Us. Daddy’s feet thud toward the front door and the hinges on the front door squeak as it swings open.” (thomas-317) This shows us that as soon as the gunshots went off, Maverick (Daddy) and Lisa (Momma) were ready to protect their children. This also shows us that Maverick was instantly ready to protect his family, no matter what danger it would put himself in or the gravity of the situation. ‘Get your hands off My Sister’ seven says.”(thomas-341/342)This shows us that Seven was ready to protect Starr no matter what. This also shows that Seven wasn't gonna let anybody touch his Sister. For example, on page 365, Seven and Iesha get into an Argument, seven says “‘That woman right there!’ He stretches his arm towards Momma. ‘Did everything you were supposed to and then some.”’(thomas-365) This shows that seven believes his step mom (Lisa) was more of a mother than his real mom (Iesha). This also shows that a step-family can be more of a real family than a real family. In conclusion, This book shows how family is very important, they will support you no matter what, and that they will always protect
