While interviewing school counselor, Melissa Gomes from Friendship Southeast Elementary Public Charter School, I was able to obtain a lot of information pertaining to a school counselor’s profession. Although, I have acquired plenty of information about a school counselor occupation throughout the last year and half of attending Trinity, the interview was very beneficial and knowledgeable. Ms. Gomes gave great insight that allowed for a better understanding of a school counselors role. At Hughes Magnet School, a team conducted a meeting to discuss some educational problems a student was having in a teacher’s classroom. The team came together to decide what the concerns of the teacher are about the student and how to properly help with those concerns. They are called an intervention team and are a group of other educators that will collaborate with the teacher to design an individual plan for that student. The purpose of the meeting was because a student named Mary was referred by her teacher as to having difficulty with staying on task and being focused.
Children who grow up in poverty are faced with a series of issues which impact their education and social atmosphere. In both the school and home setting these children lack the proper resources which they need to succeed academically. Across the country, people have begun creating programs which aim to help children in poverty succeed, despite their socioeconomic status. These programs range from after-school reading, tutoring services, charter schools, and free summer programs. All of these programs provide children with extra academic help which they may not be receiving in school or at home.
As educators, teachers have to become more involved with the student to help facilitate student learning to the best of their ability. By this, it should be noted that teachers are no longer the only source of information that a student must rely on, but a tool to use to be guided to the exploration and discovery of new information that is relevant to that individual student. Collaboration also means that teachers are allowed to meet with other teachers and professionals to reflect on best practices that will help with increased learning that is focused on equity. It will also strengthen the notions of respect, competence, personal regard and integrity among the PLC. In my senior year of high school, I remember seeing this one sophomore girl that was super cute, energetic and playful at my senior barbeque. Her smile was filled with love, but I could see that her eyes told a different story. When I decided to train to become a professional school counselor, I knew I had a long road ahead. I am trained to be a teacher, a special education teacher to be specific, and though I will be able to use much of my past experience as a classroom teacher in my school counseling practice, I am aware that I will also need to see my students in a new way, a more holistic way. I will need to focus not only on what works in the classroom, but what works in order to motivate and support the students with whom I meet. I believe that clinical counseling was what I needed, but I feel it could have been beneficial and helpful to receive support and acknowledgment from the professional school counselors on staff at our school. I believe that even if you feel like you may not be prepared to help a student it is important to at least acknowledge and address a students concern.
