Chapter 23 of Everyone’s an Author is called “Giving Credit, Avoiding Plagiarism” and gives many helpful hints to the reader about what may or may not constitute plagiarism. It also includes tips to help you remember to document your sources and some warnings about fair use. The chapter gives an excellent list of sources which do not need to be acknowledged, which include things such as “common knowledge” and your own work (402). We are also given what absolutely must be acknowledged in a list which includes “direct quotations, paraphrases, and summaries, controversial information, information given in only a few sources, and any materials that you did not create yourself” (403).

I learned that it is important to clearly state the points I plan to discuss in my thesis and use my sources to highlight my ideas or provide examples of counter arguments rather than focusing my essay around the sources. When integrating sources, I learned that it is important to clearly state your opinion and what the source does for my opinion. A good example of this is this excerpt from my Draft 2.2, “Laura Weiner provides a new stance and explains … This new take on women covering as an act of rebellion solidifies the concept that choosing to cover does not contradict feminism, while also providing the Muslim woman a feeling of strength and triumph.” I used my sources to provide the reader a new view on the issue, while solidifying my opinion.
In any school you have attended, plagiarism is a situation that a writer should not put themselves in under any circumstances. When reading the essay “Something Borrowed,” Malcolm Gladwell gave insight into the flaws of plagiarism that writers may not have thought about before. The first being that plagiarism is never acceptable (927). The second issue with plagiarism is recognizing the differences that can or cannot “inhibit creativity” (931). Being inspired by another person's work can help and guide you to build your own ideas, but simply taking their work and claiming it as yours is not permitted.

Wikipedia is a useful part of the research process. At the University of California, Riverside, one of my professor’s showed the class how you can use the website to find sources during your research. At the bottom of the page, Wikipedia includes primary and secondary sources used for the information provided on the page. Wikipedia helps you find primary and secondary sources faster since they are cited while Google gives a large amount of results. Even though Wikipedia is a useful part for research, it is not a good source to cite.
Reflecting on the proper application of APA citation in my work is always well needed. Like most, in grammar school we utilized MLA format and then transitioned into APA style in undergraduate studies. Being transparent this was a shift that discouraged me from writing. I would dread the part of having to cite others work, as much as I hated the requirement to use their work as if I had no thoughts of my own. This negative relationship I had did not decrease the assignments nor did the rules change.
In terms of primary sources in historical research, understanding the context is essential. Historical context essentially helps bridge the gap between you and the person who recorded the data. Different forms of context include understanding the language or dialect from that period, the purpose for recording the information and the political climate of that time; essentially anything that helps the reader to understand why the document was recorded and how to interpret its data. Many times, sources are not written with the intention of them being studied 500 years into the future, they are written more as personal letters or for posterities sake, so they cannot always be taken as bluntly factual. One of the more difficult facets of reading historical writings is the language.
