Communication skills are both verbal and non-verbal messages which include words, phrases, voice tones, facial expressions, gestures, sign language and body language that people use to interact with another person (OSCE home, 2004). Verbal communication refers to the use of sounds, words and language to deliver a message to other while non-verbal communication refers to the message is delivered without the use of words but through the use of body language, gestures, facial expressions, voice tones, as well as the use of pictures, symbols and icons (Bruno, G., 2015).

Effective communication is very important in the healthcare field especially between healthcare practitioners and patients (Effective communication advice.com, 2012).
