James Butler Hickok, also known as Wild Bill Hickok, was born on May 27th, 1837, in Troy Grove, Illinois. During his life Wild Bill Hickok did a vast amount of incredible acts such as being a drover, wagon master, soldier, spy, scout, lawman, gunfighter, gambler, showman, and actor. He is most notibly remembered as being the sheffif of two ruthless towns in Kansas, both of which he helped become better the lawless towns. Wild Bill Hickok was an integral part in helping the United States’ Western front turn from a lawless wasteland into a land filled with more order and lawfulness. On July 12, 1861, McCanles came to collect a debt from James. This started a gunfight between McCanles, along with his gang, and James Hickok. Hickok was victorious in this fight, and was not charged due to the police saying his actions were done in self defense. This story eventually made James widely known as a gunfighter and many think that day earned him his famous nickname “Wild Bill Hickok”. Others think the nickname was given very soon after the gunfight, during his time as a wagon master and scout for the Union Army in the Civil War. After his time in the Union Army, Wild Bill started looking for work as sheriff for a town. His first attempt at being sheriff was for Ellsworth County, Kansas, but lost. Soon after this, he went back into the military, but was injured. After returning from his injury, Wild Bill landed a job as sheriff for Hays City, Kansas. During the times of the lawless wild west, the people did not need people protesting wether or not the death of a criminal was necessarily justified or not. What the people needed was a man of action that was unafraid to do what was needed to be done. If it weren’t for Wild Bill Hickok, many criminals would have either went about their lives as a physically free man or would have been sent to prison for a short time only to return to the horrendous deeds they famously performed as soon as they were released. If Wild Bill Hickok was not wild, criminals would have never had a thought as to wether they should break the law or not. With Wild Bill having his notorious reputation of being very aggressive and accurate, criminals thought twice about breaking the law wherever the wild sheriff abode. One man, by the name of Miguel Otero, was an eye witness to one of the many acts that gave James Butler his famous nickname. Miguel witnessed James take out a notorious murderer, Bill Mulvey. In this encounter, James outsmarted the murderer, making him turn his back to the wild sheriff.
