Throughout human history, abortion has been a prevalent construct of society. From the contraceptive methods of the ancient Greeks, to the case of Roe v. Wade in 1973 that determined the Supreme Court nominations of today, abortion has evolved immensely. With its evolution has come debate, discussion, laws and guidelines. Today, a wide array of perspectives and opinions both cloud and confirm the idea of abortion. Abortion is the deliberate act of terminating a pregnancy. Recently, the abortion debate has been generally divided into the “pro-life” and “pro-choice” point of views. The pro-life view negates abortion in most or all cases. Unsafe abortions occur when there is either no effective access to abortion in an area, or it is completely illegal. Legalized abortions are actually a positively impact society, due to the plethora of benefits, such as lowering health risks. A study completed by the Guttmacher Institute found that 25 million unsafe abortions, or 45% of all abortions, occurred worldwide between 2010 and 2014. The majority of these, around 97%, occurred in developing countries such as those in Africa, Asia, and in Latin America. Many developing and third world countries have either made abortion illegal, or are not stable enough to provide their women with safe and effective abortion and contraceptive care. Some have ignored the topic of abortion entirely. Illegality or difficult access of abortion consequently causes unfortunate means of terminating pregnancies. Some of these makeshift methods are extremely harmful, with many ending fatally to the woman. Many of these are also executed by untrained or unqualified caregivers, who in result can not provide safe and effective care. Studies show that their conditions are much more likely to result in negative outcomes , highlighting the urgent need for legalization and effective access of abortion.
