For several years, A.P. and honors courses have assigned work over the summer, why discontinue this tradition? The purpose of the summer assignments is to develop a mindset for students to exert all their effort in an academic challenge as a preparation for college. Without the assistance, a high school student would struggle with an advanced and faster-paced class. The summer assignment aids and prevents a student from failing by allowing them to be introduced to the class early. Moreover, the summer assignment can determine if a student is able to handle an A.P. or honors course beforehand; a lacking student procrastinating, would potentially fail the course and drop it for a regular one. Considering the courses are difficult, colleges assign tasks over the summer in order for students to develop skills for the school year. This method is effective being the student can adapt to the college’s standards. In addition to an A.P. course being taught similarly to the level above, they also assign summer work. Students abhor the fact of having to do summer assignments, although it will guide them through the obstacles or difficulties in the near future. For example, according to the author of the article, College Freshman Summer Reading, college summer assignments “help build a sense of community with the incoming class of students” (Lucier). Summer assignments allow students to adapt to a laborious course. Colleges and A.P. classes execute their work similarly, so as their teaching style. Whether it’s a vacation in Hawaii, or staying home watching television, they use this time to relieve stress from their minds and bodies. They don’t want to urgently cram in last minute homework or projects like the summer assignment. The break can be used for relaxing and spending precious time with family. However, you have two months worth of free time that most likely won’t be occupied on a daily basis. Even if you are occupied on a daily basis, the summer assignment only needs twenty minutes of your time. With just twenty minutes a day, the summer assignment can be fulfilled throughout the two months. For example, 2016 James Logan Summer Assignment took approximately two weeks to finish, only spending 20 minutes to 40 minutes a day to complete.
