ADHD, also known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, has several misconceptions. People assume that those who have ADHD are mentally ill, or that they can or will outgrow it, or here is a big one, that ADHD isn’t a real disorder and that it is just an excuse to be lazy and dumb. As an individual who has ADHD, I can first hand tell you that these misconceptions are one hundred percent false. People sometimes base their opinion or assumptions on information they heard from someone or without knowing anything about the subject that they are making assumptions about.
One big misconception about ADHD is that it is not a real disorder. This is wrong. ADHD is real and is recognized by The National Institute of Health, The U.S. Department of Education, and The American Psychiatric Association as a medical disorder. ADHD is a severe problem that affects about ten percent of the United States population. People struggle with the effects of ADHD not only in the classroom, but it also makes accomplishing an everyday task difficult. Those with it must work harder than those without it because of a chemical imbalance in the brain. People with this disorder have physically different brain from those without. …show more content…

Again, wrong! It cannot be out grown, but its form can change over time whether that be that your ADHD gets better or worse or you fix one symptom and develop a new one. Most likely if you want it to change for the better you would have to either take medicine or behavioral therapy. Typically, if one were to “outgrow” ADHD, there is only one part that can be out grown and that is the hyperactivity part, but the impulsiveness and inattentiveness remain from childhood throughout the individual’s adolescence.
