The average age of the farmer has declined this year and that is one of the problems that we now see because new people aren’t taking the place of the older people in the farming field. “The average age of a farmer today in America is 57 years of age. Five years ago it was 55. We have had an increase of 30% of the farmers over the age of 75 and a decrease in the number of farmers under the age of 25 by 20%” (start2farm.gov), this excerpt comes from an article by the USDA that talks about the demographics of the average farmer. You get up at the crack of dawn and don’t go to sleep until after the sun has set. It is truly a labor of love. In animal agriculture, you have to feed the animals, check on the animals, give them immunizations, trim their hooves, run them through shoots and much more. It takes a toll on you, but if you love it, it doesn’t seem like work. That line of labor is so much different than a typical desk job. Not many jobs require that much labor and it is kind of a turn off for many people in this modern generation. Our generation is all about luxury and easiness, we have stopped going outside and are, for the most time, relaxing. Our generation wants to get by with as minimal effort that they can put in. We have become lazy as a society and it has become a detriment to the agricultural field. The fact is that farming is too hard for people of today’s society, and without new workers, the act of farming will become a thing of the past. As Warren Beeler put it, “ We have had to start creating more with less” (Beeler), and that is true. Without the interest of people who want to put the time in, we have to start growing bigger crops and harvest cows faster in order to keep up with the continuously growing population. We need to somehow change the lazy mindset of America and show them that hard work pays
