The animals are forced to endure drug and chemical testing that can harm them. According to the People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals Organization, “Examples of animal tests include forcing mice and rats to inhale toxic fumes, force-feeding dogs pesticides, and dripping corrosive chemicals into rabbits’ sensitive eyes.” In addition, the New England Anti-Vivisection Society stated, “Animals in labs suffer not only pain from protocols, but also severe stress from day-to-day laboratory life. They spend their lives in barren cages, unable to make choices or express natural behaviors. Most never experience fresh air or sunshine, only bars and concrete.”
Animal tests produce results which are not applicable to humans. Important cellular, genetic and structural differences between humans and other type of animals have prevented animal models from serving as effective models in order to find a treatment. Animals are not little human. Although humans share most of their genes with other mammals, there are still differences in how human’s body function. Small differences in an individual’s biochemistry can account for the drastic variation in reactions among members of the same species and between members of different species.
Now animals are tested to see if the chemicals in cosmetics will burn humans or to find cures for diseases. Many of the tests that are performed on animals that are proved effective on animals do not work on humans. Unfortunately, many people do not know this and continue to support animal testing. Many of the methods that are used are cruel to the animal and makes them suffer. Although animal testing has helped scientists to find cures, it comes at a heavy price.
Animal testing is cruel, unjust, and wasteful, and it needs to stop. It is used to test cosmetics, to gain scientific knowledge, and for tests in schools. The Humane Society states that animal testing is tests performed on live animals for basic biology, medicinal, safety, or health research. Even small procedures have the capabilities to cause the animal high stress or discomfort. Some animals are used in future experiments, but most are killed soon after the tests.
Moreover, testing for cosmetics is obviously evil to animals. The fact that people take small helpless animals to torture them, so human could feel better. In the article “Animal Testing-A Necessary Evil?” Paterson reports that “Animals are also not just exposed to short periods of physical restraint but also prolonged periods. They can be deprived of food and water and wounds are inflicted, along with burns and other injuries in order to study healing.
The study took a look at publicly paid for animal tests in the United States and the United Kingdom. The scientists used monkeys and rodents as their primary test subjects. Nearly 300 reports were collected from leading biomedical research publishers. Out of all of the acquired publications, only 59% of them proclaimed their study’s goal, the amount of animals that they used, and important traits of their test subjects. All of these factors are expected to be made public in order to display a credible and successful scientific experiment (Kilkenny et al. 3).
To summarize, the opponents of animal testing believe that these experimentations are cruel and inhumane and it should be stopped. A lot of experiences did not give the same results for both animals and human. That means that the human body is different from animal’s body. Moreover, the animals suffer a lot from these experiments. They get burned, poisoned, and killed every day in the laboratories.
Animal testing goes as far back to greek philosophers such as Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) and Erasistratus (304 – 258 BC). Whom once performed testing on animals to advance behavior of something or who aspired to alter brain activity. However there was scientists such as Galen (129 – 199 / 217 AD), who used animals in order to attempt to improve various human activity within the body. Specifically focusing on cures and treatment for those who don't have them. Later, Ibn Zuhr began to use animal testing to benefit humans in which he would perform surgeries on them to ensure that the procedures would not harm humans.
As an animal owner myself, testing on animals has always been a topic on my mind but I did not know much about it other then the fact that it hurt animals most of the time. At first I was against animal testing but after research my position has changed. Animal testing began in about 500 B.C. and has continued to this day but has increased and advanced more then ever before. New vaccines and cures for diseases have been created and have save many lives.
Animal testing has been used since the 1400’s to better human health and has become increasingly used since the 19th century. Since then, animal testing has become very controversial with the appearance of animal rights groups and the topic of whether animal testing is morale or not. Because of this, rules and regulations such as the Federal Animal Welfare Act (1966) have been passed to ensure the welfare of the animals that are tested on. Still, the question of whether animal testing is morale and should be allowed presents itself.
Since Ancient Greece, humans have used animals as a means of learning more about the world. The first known vivisection was done by a Greek philosopher, Alcmaeon, in 450 BCE (“Animal” 1). Since then, animals have had invasive tests performed on them, they have been killed, and they have been experimented on in the name of science or for profit. Some experiments are in order to demonstrate already known facts to students, while others are to further medical knowledge, and some are to test drugs and cosmetics (“Animal” 2). Animals are used, and have been used for millennia, in order to make products, procedures, and life in general, safer for humans―stemming from the belief that human lives are more important than animals’.
Animals are included in our everyday lives no matter what. Whether it be your next meal or playing fetch with your dog or even putting on your moisturizer, animals are a part of the whole process. Animals are being used everyday to test things in order for us, humans, to be safe. Humans are ignoring the fact that animals are constantly being tested on to see if a makeup product or medication is okay for us. Animal testing is such a cruel thing that goes on everyday in labs and factories without us knowing.
Animal experimentation has been a very controversial debate for many years. About 100 million animals are killed in laboratories for drug and cosmetic testing. They are used for medical testing and for dissecting in biology lessons. I think animal testing is something that isn’t necessary at all. Animals are not treated well and are often abused by their handlers.
Leaping Toward a Cruelty-Free World Worldwide, cosmetic animal testing is still implemented. Although some parts of the world have banned testing chemicals on animals such as the European Union and New Zealand, countries such as the United States and Canada continue to consent. “The beauty industry makes people look and feel beautiful but is horrifically ugly when it comes to the treatment of animals in laboratories.” (Cole 2). Knowing the alternatives, organizations, and cruelty-free products ultimately improves the knowledge about animal testing.
According to Murnaghan (2016), some companies breed and sell animals for the purpose of animal testing. Other than that, animal testing is done repeatedly to create an average for the purpose of accuracy. Since animal testing may happen more than once, additional cost may incurred.
