We have all heard talk of anthropogenic climate change, also referred to as global warming; this is a topic so highly politicized that the United States is still in debate about the validity of anthropogenic climate change. We see questions pop up such as: what is climate change and does human activity actually have any real significant impact on the climate? For this paper I want to focus in on two very significant topics. First I want to look at glaciers and sea ice to see if there is significant melting or growth of these large sheets of ice. Second I want to look at the anthropogenic, or human related aspect of climate change; if human activity is really affecting climate change. I plan on drawing from the videos Chasing Ice and Dimming the Sun to look at the various research that has been done to prove the retreat of glacial ice and the human impact on the climate. The other argument I’ve heard fairly consistently is the fact that the shifting climate is totally normal and they will believe in the idea of climate change but they refuse to believe that humans have any significant impact. Glaciers are melting and the climate is changing and we humans believe ourselves to be all powerful expect when it comes to changing our climate; so what is it, are we or aren’t we having an impact on our climate? In order to tackle such a controversial and heavily politicized topic there are a few foundational statements that need to be laid out. First we need to define what climate change is. The EPA defines climate change as “any significant change in the measure of climate lasting for an extended period of time.” (“Glossary of Climate Change Terms |
