Antibiotics the Good and the Bad
Is society aware that they could be facing a major problem created by themselves if antibiotics are not used correctly? Resistance against antibiotics has just recently become a problem. Farmers use antibiotics by giving them to their livestock, which does have many benefits, but also has a downside after being harvested. Overusing antibiotics is thought to lead to resistant strains of bacteria that no antibiotic can cure. Some believe that antibiotics should be used in food animals because it treats illnesses and promotes growth, while others believe antibiotics should not be used because the resistant strains could end up affecting humans through their meat.
There are benefits from antibiotics in the livestock industry if used correctly. Farmers believe they directly benefit from using antibiotics in their feed for their livestock. A key reason that farmers benefit from the antibiotics is, “Animals receiving antibiotics in their feed gain 4% to 5% more body weight than animals that do not receive antibiotics” (Eye, 2016). With the antibiotics increasing the weight gain of the animals that means, the market animal will weigh more than normal and will be growing faster. The people against antibiotics want the use of them to be cut back before they start having an effect on the people. Farmers are more interested in keeping their animals healthy and them growing faster. This means that they don’t want anything to change.
