Gasoline and diesel require a replacement because of these reasons and as previously mentioned Energy Independence. With all these factors against Gasoline it becomes clear that it needs to be replaced, but with what? Alternative fuels? That is the obvious answer and being of a broad definition it is also the right answer if they're implemented properly. Think for a moment about Tape Players, or VCRs, technology was created and allowed to compete head-to-head with this older medium. When CD players and DVD players came out initially they were very expensive, but as time passed and these items started to be produced in bigger numbers the prices decreased. Natural Gas is cheap, plentiful and cleaner than gasoline or diesel but is very expensive to setup a filling station ($1 million~) because of the pressure that needs to be utilized for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is also expensive to setup a station ($1-4 million~) due to the requirements of special insulated tanks and also due to it being cryogenically frozen (AFDC). Natural Gas does however provide the same energy content that 1gal of gas does which makes it a very viable solution. Propane's popularity comes in large part due to how inexpensive it is to setup a filling station ($100,000~) (AFDC) Many big companies such as Schwann, and UPS have increased the number of vehicles they have running on these alternative fuels. Public transportation has increasingly moved in this direction as well, with bus fleets moving towards Natural Gas and Propane (apta). The public transportation sector displays the issues of alternative fuels very well in the colossal diversity of alternative fuel options they utilize. Some fleets are utilizing Biodiesel, some are using Hybrid Diesels like the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority, some CNG like UNH or CATA (Centre Area Transportation Authority) which serves Penn State, some LPG, and some all electric vehicles.
