According to the journal article, “Genetically Modified Organisms and Biodiversity: Assessing the Threats,” written by Camilo Pardo, a GMO is an organism that has had a specific characterized sample of DNA from an outside source inserted into its genome in a stable manner. The methods to as to how the strand of DNA is implemented into these organisms has stirred public controversy throughout time due to the misconceptions of what a GMO is. The beginning of this controversy started in 1980 when there was a supreme court case known as “Diamond v. Chakraborty” which debated over if GMOs should be patented, which soon led to the public believing that scientist wanted to make profit when the first GMO food source came about in 1994, which was the Flavr Savr tomato, according to, GL Woolsey, a writer for Rosebud Magazine. Due to the miseducation and sources throughout the media this has led the general public to believe that genetically modified foods are not safe to eat and can lead to negative impacts on the environment. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Foundation in 2015, only 37% of the general public believes that GMO foods are safe to eat, yet 88% of scientist have supported GMOs. These misconceptions are primarily due to the lack of education in the math and science fields throughout the United States according to 97% of scientists (Associated Press, 2015). …show more content…
