The Pros And Cons Of Genetically Modified Organisms

740 Words3 Pages

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. GMOs are plants or animals that have been changed to have a new and/or different affect. Genetically modified organisms have certain genes or pieces of DNA injected into the original organisms seed. So, when it grows, it will have a different outcome then what the original seed would have had. Since these drastic changes are being made, there can be problems like health issues. There are also environmental problems because of the change being made to the natural product. Also, since the new organism is advanced and made to improve, they do not get tested to see if there are problems it causes. Genetically modified organisms have caused serious problems in people and our environment proving them …show more content…

For example, we will refer back to the issue with glyphosate. Since we know that glyphosate can cause autism we would not like other people consuming it because of the risks it poses but, it cannot be that avoidable. Glyphosate gets washed off of the plants it was put on and can be part of runoff that is closer to us than we would expect (source 5). This runoff containing glyphosate can affect living organisms in streams or rivers like fish, it might even be found in our water supply (source 5). If you are sold on the idea of staying away from GMOs it might not be that easy. There is another problem, and that is that genetically modified plants can cross pollinate with organically grown plants. Basically, the pollen from either the GM plant or the organic one cross with one another (source 5). So, in the next generation, the genetically engineered plant will not be affected but, the organic plant will change because it does not have something to defend it. The cross pollination can later lead to create “superweeds” that are intolerable to herbicides making it hard to kill (source 7). Therefore, if you tried to steer clear from genetically engineered foods, you might deceptionally end up consuming foods that have been near
