Green Hope High School prides itself on being a modern school, one that isn’t afraid of stepping into new territories technology-wise, and one that keeps up with the times of education. the school was one of the early adopters of the BYOD program in Wake County. It maintains a cart of laptops in every classroom, in the name of adapting to the increasingly digital era of teaching and learning. However, the fact that these laptops and computers are still running old software works in contrast against the previously mentioned “cutting-edge school”.
Much of school, especially high school in particular, is geared towards preparing students for their entries into society; that is, their entering the labor force. For those who will use technology in their career, which in this day and age will be many of them, they cannot receive the adequate training using software and hardware that is long outdated. For example, the Programming classes are familiar with using Visual Studio, Microsoft’s own programming environment. It is common knowledge that all operating systems have their end-of-life dates, and past certain dates, support for said software becomes increasingly sparse, and only major issues get patched out, if at all. The recent WannaCry ransomware attacks back in May have demonstrated the need to maintain on top of software updates and versions. While initially, all distributions of Microsoft Windows were at risk, the most recent, 10, received the most support, with the earliest, XP, only received an emergency patch, after the virus had begun its attacks. While it is probably out of the school’s scope to switch to a completely Mac OS environment, it would do well to let the students use a new, safer operating system on its school
