In America, guns are one of the most controversial subjects. Millions of Americans believe gun regulation should increase, while some even believe that firearms should be banned. There are also millions of Americans that believe gun laws are strict enough. Before you can create an opinion, you need to analyze the facts on firearms in America. This can be done by learning gun history, pros and cons of firearms in America, and how US gun regulations have changed over time.
The history of firearms started off in the year 142, when a man named Wei Boyang wrote about gunpowder, saying that it was a mixture that could “fly and dance.” (PBS) From then, many scientists and researchers worked on creating a tool that could be used with gunpowder. This major accomplishment was made in the year 1000, when the first “fire lance” was created. (Weeks, 2013) The first known use of a weapon with bullets was recorded in 1346, a cannon. (PBS) In 1364 the first record of a handheld gun was made. By the year of 1375, handguns were popular in Italy and surrounding countries. “Over the next couple of centuries, matchlocks, wheel locks and flintlocks — forerunners of today's rifles — were introduced.” (Weeks, 2013)

One of these would be the feeling of being safe. The right to bear arms allows citizens to have a form of protection if they are caught in a dangerous situation with another person or animal. “According to the National Rifle Association (NRA), guns are used for self-defense 2.5 million times a year.” (ProCon) As you can see, there are many situations that cause serious actions to be taken. One example of this would be an armed robbery. The DOJ stated that 41% of home break-ins involve a firearm.
