Those who support gun control focus in isolation on the use of firearms in mass shootings while ignoring the fact that firearms can also be used to prevent such tragedies as well. In 2007, for example, a gunman entered New Life Church in Colorado Springs, and shot and killed two girls. Fortunately, former Police Chief Jeanne Assam drew her firearm and wounded the gunman before he could kill anyone else. A similar case happened in 1997. High school student Luke Woodham stabbed his mother, drove to Pearl High School in Pearl, Mississippi, and proceeded to kill two people. Luckily, Assistant Principal Joel Myrick grabbed his pistol and forced Woodham to surrender (Bennet 1.) The same thing happened in Great Britain, where handguns are currently banned, yet the number of robberies ended up increasing by 19%, the number of violent offenses rose by 5%, and the number of sexual offenses rose by 2%. London got it the worst though. After the handgun ban, crime in London rose by a whopping 22% (Cothran 133.) Politicians push for gun control, claiming that it will reduce gun violence, but it really does the exact opposite. The abolishment of firearms not only increases violent crime, but other kinds of crime as well. Firearm bans aren’t the only types of gun restriction laws under consideration though. Another popular target of gun control proponents are concealed carry laws. A Concealed carry is the right to carry a firearm on your person so long as it is concealed and safely put away. Those against concealed carry see it as enabling criminals to commit crimes like homicide or armed robbery, but in truth it is more commonly used as a means to defend against those things.
