"Rooting to January 1st, 1983, the internet was released to the public in the form of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), which was originally a military technology funded by the Department of Defense. It ran off of a Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP, so from the start, the internet contained restrictions. However, these restrictions were mandatory to set the precedents for how the internet would be used in future decades. The recent activity from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding net neutrality is moving the internet in a direction of unjustified restrictions. Internet users, as of now, have enough issues with the way the network currently operates with examples such as cell phone reception, video buffering, and general lag. In the event monitoring comes into play, there will arise a large strain on processes such as these because the information is not only uploading or downloading, but passing through analytical screenings as well, which in turn slows the process down even more. According to ACLU.org, internet providers have new technology that enables them to tamper with every piece of information sent or received online, including websites, email, videos, internet phone calls, or data generated by games or social networks. At the moment, they have no rights to practice this because of internet protections, but manipulation is foreshadowed in the event the protections are abolished, “they can program the computers that route that information to interfere with the data flow by slowing down or blocking traffic and communicators that they don't like, and speeding up traffic they do like or that pays them extra for the privilege” (ACLU.org). Although it has good intentions, the end result does not justify the means. For every act of terror prevented by infiltrating every citizen’s device, there will be thousands of everyday internet users feeling the wrath of network limitations. Also, internet freedom is not the root of the terrorism or bullying problem because instances of both were prevalent before the internet was even released to the public. If the internet was no longer a concealed form of committing these acts, then such people would find another way to do so
