In the United States the Internet is the first place that everyone goes to when they want to get information. The Internet provides everything that anyone could possibly want and on the Internet everyone is considered as equals. That can quickly all go away. The only way to keep the Internet the way it is, is to preserve Internet neutrality. Sascha Meinrath, a Director at X-Lab-The New Venture Fund, and Victor W. Pickard, Professor of Communication, University of Pennsylvania, define Internet neutrality, also known as network neutrality, as a “ non- discriminatory interconnectedness among data communication networks that allows users to access the content and to run the services, applications, and devices of their choice" (Meinrath, Pickard …show more content…

Michael Baumann, a staff writer at The Ringer declared that “Net neutrality supporters are concerned that the sheer lobbying power of the telecom giants will sway Congress to eliminate Net neutrality" (Baumann par 14). The current head of the FCC, Ajit Pai, has stated his opposition towards the FCC’s current Internet neutrality rules. He is plotting to take steps towards altering the current Internet neutrality ruling (Cantwell par 1). Then there's George Soros who is a huge proponent for Internet censorship. His “document titled ‘Open Society Justice Initiative Proposed 2014 Strategy’ was part of the huge cache of leaked documents released by DC Leaks from George Soros’ Open Society Foundations”[OPS] (Dmitry par 2). This document “advocates for private operators to be brought under international control. And the laws and regulations are to be decided by OPS and it’s supporters. The initiative aims to put significant power of the Internet in the hands of Open Society Foundations. Which in turn, means a Soros controlled internet” (Dmitry par 9). If Pai and the FCC were to do away with Internet neutrality and Soros or OPS were to gain control over the Internet, the idea of a open Internet will be abandoned and there will be heavy censorship. There are also many countries around the world that have their Internet monitored by the government and have restrictions on what the people of their country can view or access on the Internet thus censoring them.
