The open internet is in danger of facing a worldwide crisis. Just imagine trying to access your favorite sites and apps, but a payment is required in order to access them.Well, Ajit Pai, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), has plans underway to end the principle that allows us to access the internet without many restrictions. This principle is known as net neutrality. Net neutrality is the principle that allows all people to use the internet freely without internet companies setting their own restrictions on certain things. Some people believe ending net neutrality is a good idea while others think otherwise. Columbian law professor Tim Wu was the first to coin the phrase “network neutrality” in June 2003 (Net Neutrality Timeline). Internet issues began when Comcast blocked some of its customers from using BitTorrent, a competitor of Comcast that provides a video-downloading software, in October 2007 (Net Neutrality Timeline). One year later the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), an agency in charge of regulating communication services, gets involved and calls for Comcast to discontinue from blocking customers from BitTorrent services. In response to the FCC, Comcast decides to sue, and a federal appeals court sides with Comcast in April 2010. At the end of this same year, the FCC adopts formal net neutrality rules, which then causes Verizon, a major phone company, to sue the FCC due to the rules that were put in place (Net Neutrality Timeline). A federal appeals court sides with Verizon in January 2014, arguing that the FCC does not have the power to control ISPs as common carriers.
