Uranium, one of earth’s periodic elements, made up the atomic bomb. After Germany invaded Europe, scientists believed that the United States would quickly be involved in World War II, causing them to push for an acceleration of atomic research. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the war, and in the following months Roosevelt created the Manhattan Project, which proceeded with the construction of the atomic bomb . Japan felt they could not accept the terms they were given in the Potsdam Proclamation. The proclamation was the list of defining terms calling for Japan to surrender. Later on, Americans concluded that for Japan to surrender, the bomb must be used.
In order to understand the need for the atomic bomb, it is important to note why the U.S. felt the pressure to have such a dangerous weapon. On December 7, 1941 Hitler declares war on the United States, and Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Creating a war that was now being fought in the Pacific, Atlantic, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia. In an attempt to defend themselves the United States sent a message by sending their first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945 to Hiroshima and three days later in Nagasaki destroying their industrial cities. The devastation created by this bomb was a new threat that no one had seen before.
The United States began the Manhattan project to prevent the Axis powers from developing an atomic weapon first. The Manhattan project began after Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard sent President Franklin Delano Roosevelt a letter warning of Germany possibly developing an atomic weapon. They wanted to develop it the first because if the Axis powers were to get the bomb first things could end terribly. The tyrants in the Axis powers were very power-hungry and wanted to achieve world domination. These beliefs along with their impulsiveness could lead to nations or groups being almost or completely wiped out.
Atomic Bomb Thesis I personally believe that the idea of the atomic bombs being necessary to be used on Japan during WWII is completely wrong. I think this way because through the eyes of many soldiers and powerful leaders themselves, Japan was ready to surrender and couldn't continue to fight. The Japanese were willing to negotiate with the allies with certain conditions regarding their emperor. And finally, the bombs themselves weren't even dropped on any military bases or threats to the United States army and instead on cities in Japan.
