Wasting Lives Fighting ISIS
How many lives should be wasted fighting ISIS? Sending troops to fight ISIS would have very negative impacts for the US, including economical, legal, and moral problems. Some people would say that putting troops on the ground in Syria would be economically smart, saying that the US could make money by taking over all the oil wells controlled by ISIS. However that land is not for the US to decide what to with it. It would cost $15.2 Billion more to send troops than to continue air raids on the ISIS insurgents. It would also be illegal to deploy troops to Syria due to the fact that the Syrian president has not authorized it.

According to UN article 51, which states, “Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations” the US is breaking international law as the country of Syria has not made a direct attack on the US. As ISIS, is a non state attacker and do not have their own legitimate country, it is illegal for the US to go to war in Syria. Therefore, under article 51 of the US deploying ground troops to fight ISIS is breaking international law. Also the president would need approval from Congress to go to war against ISIS. Thirdly the Syrian president himself said that sending troops to his country without permission will be treated as invaders. "Any foreign troops coming to Syria without our invitation or consultation or permission, they are invaders, whether they are American, Turkish, or any other one," (Assad) said.
