The first difference between Primary school in Italy and in Finland is the duration. In Italy is recognised as “primary school” the school period from six to eleven years old, instead in Finland the basic education is a longer process that starts at the age of seven and least until the age of sixteen. That doesn’t mean that in Italy the basic education least less, but the study course is divided in more parts: the end of the compulsory education is for both countries when the child is sixteen years old, but in Finland the basic education is a continuous, organic process, in Italy there is a distinction between the first five years of primary school and the second three years of middle school (first degree secondary school). In Finland the time that children spend in class depends on the grade: in the first and in the second one they have 19 hours, in the third 22, in the fourth 24, in the fifth and sixth 25, in the seventh and eighth 29 and in the ninth 30 hours per week (Finnish National Board of Education, 2016, Compulsory Education in Finland http://www.oph.fi/download/180148_Compulsory_education_in_Finland.pdf). I think it is a good organization for children: growing up they can pay attention for more time and they can sustain more hours of school, but I think that it could also be a problem for the parents that have to take care about the children when they are not at school. Teaching time in Finland is much more less than in the other countries but it is used in a more effective way, because they have one of the most efficient school organization in Europe. Also the timetable changes year by year but lessons are still long almost 45 minutes and after each one there is a fifteen-minutes break and they also have launch in about 20/30 minutes.
