Chess in Islam was an adaptation from India in the 6th century and it was passed into Persia. In Persia it became popular and it spread to the Muslims. In other places that spread they started to change the rules or pieces of the game. Chess came to Muslims after the Islamic conquest of Persia. Archaeologists are still debating were chess originated from. The pieces were based on animals like the bishop and the elephants. It required skill and strategy to win the game because you have to protect your king and also try to take out the opponent's king. When chess came to Muslims it spread even more to Europe and also changed a lot.
