Demographics of China
China expands over almost 4 million square miles in South East Asia. It is the most populous country on earth with a population of over 1.3 billion people which is equivalent to 1/5th of the world population (Zhang, 2012). This vast area borders 13 countries including Russia and Mongolia to the north, India to the southwest, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam to the south, and is bordered on the east coast by the Yellow Sea, South China Sea, and East China Sea. The climate in China is very diverse due to its size. South China experiences tropical climates while North China has a subarctic climate.
The terrain to the east is hilly with many plains and plateaus while the western side of the country is mountainous with higher plateaus and desert ranges. China is home to the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, which lies in an …show more content…

However, many of their core values are the same. The traditional values that influence the Chinese people are benevolence, loyalty, filial piety, and righteousness (Lihua, 2013). The beliefs and behaviors of the Chinese are a result of a culture that is derived from Confucianism. During the Communist rule Confucianism was broken down and substituted with values that were consistent with social responsibility. Following the People’s Revolution many of the Confucian values were brought back and still stand today. According to the teachings of Confucius, people have their different roles in society. Chinese culture values a hierarchical structure in which the man is the bread winner and head of the household. Women are seen as second class citizens, this is apparent in the one child law that had been in place in the country where women were given the option of aborting a baby just because it was a girl.
