A strong sense of devotion, persistence, and determination can help pave a path leading to insanity, death, or both. Despite such potential circumstances, there are times where people are still willing to do what they can to be triumphant. For instance, ¨The Other Side of the Sky¨ (Tanim Ansary) is about a girl named Farah and her mother trying to escape their hometown in Afghanistan after it is invaded by the Taliban. The Cremation of Sam McGee (Robert W. Service) speaks of a man named Cap and his friend Sam McGee, who ends up freezing to death due to the cold weather. Sam tells Cap that he wishes to be cremated instead of left out in the cold when he dies, so Cap embarks on a mission to fulfill Sam’s wish. The Call of the Wild by Jack London tells the story of a dog named Buck who was raised as a domesticated animal joining a sled-dog pack and tuning in with his natural instincts. He watched his good friend die, and ending up having to drag his dead body through very harsh, cold weather just to have to find a way to create a fire to cremate Sam. He did all of this because he loved and cared about Sam, and wanted him to rest peacefully. He felt that it was important that he grant Sam his last wish, which becomes evident in line 25, “A pal’s last need is a thing to heed, so I swore I would not fail…”. Cap was so determined to give Sam his wish that he ended up going mad. As he progresses on his journey, he starts to talk and sing to Sam’s dead body, which can be seen in line 40, “And I’d often sing to the hateful thing, and it hearkened with a grin.” However, he persists due to the love that he has for his friend. Although he succeeds in his mission, the effect it has is similar to a parasitic relationship; Sam benefits from the relationship because his wish is granted, while Cap goes insane completing the wish due to how much he
