Did you video games have been out since the 1970s? This essay will be informing the dateline of video game consoles. From the old 2D graphics of Pong and Pacman to amazing graphics of our new games our generation has made. When we look at it we have also seen video games from a box with a TV evolved into phones and computers. With these bits and pieces of information will make you understand how video games evolved from one to another.
In 1967 the first working prototype video game with 2 controllers was named the “Black Box” invented by Ralph H. Baer. The brown box had 6 simple games which was Ping-Pong, handball, volleyball, chase games, and a light-gun game. The companies Atari, Celeco, and Mattel basically lost the competition when Sega and Nintendo joined the gaming era due to their unpopularity. Celeco dominated the video game market until the NES was introduced to the US and UK market after the 1984 video game industry crash. Due to this the Celeco company ended up releasing its last console the CelecoVision. Other companies’ consoles that were brought to the market also failed because of the intense battle between the Sega Master System and the NES. On the first few years of 1990s there wa s a switch from having game cartages to compact disc. Also due to that they made a switch from 2D into 3D graphics. The first CD video game console was released by Phillips in 1991 but was known as a failure of the standard game and controls. The NEC TurboGrafx-16 was upgraded into the TurboGrafx-CD in 1992 because there was more demand for CD-based consoles. However it lost against the Sega Genesis with the add-on, the Sega CD. Atari also lost the contest against the Sega Saturn and the Sony Playstation a year after. In 1994 Sega and Sony went to CD-based consoles, but Nintendo didn’t make the transition and made another new cartridge-based console Nintendo 64. SNK Neo Geo transitioned to a CD-based console in 1994. People think that video game addiction has something to do with control. That’s exactly right; video game addiction is described as an impulsive control disorder. It’s just like gambling and doing drugs, but with the over use of video gaming. Most people that would suffer with this disorder may use the internet to access MMORPGs (massive multiplayer online game) and MUDs (multi-user domain games). MMORPGs are a network of interacting people accomplishing mission, getting rich, questing, and/or just chatting with other online players. MUDs are basically the same thing, but with more PVP (Player vs. Player) which is basically killing each other with no ending. Some people also refer to games as a real-life human connection and are unable to achieve that normally. Players usually get the feeling of loyalty and obligation to other players. In addition other players have relationships with other online players which are basically strangers.
